From November 13th to 14th, 2025, the "International Academic Forum on Cultural Heritage Conservation and Management" of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts (GAFA) was held at the University Town Campus.

In his speech, Fan Bo expressed his hope that this seminar would serve as a starting point to jointly build a cultural heritage protection research and teaching system that combines international consensus with Chinese characteristics through interdisciplinary mutual learning and the integration of Chinese and foreign perspectives. He also hoped that this would contribute the wisdom and strength of the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts to the deep integration of universities and the cultural heritage protection industry, the dialogue and interaction between the international and domestic communities, and the two-way empowerment of art and technology.
克劳德·拉罗克在致辞中引用了中国谚语“单丝不成线,独木不成林”,感谢各方力量对本次国际论坛的大力支持,并坚信多元协作将是未来应对文化遗产保护挑战的关键所在。
In his address, Claude Laroque quoted the Chinese proverb "A single thread cannot make a line, and a single tree cannot make a forest," expressing his gratitude for the strong support from all parties for this international forum and his firm belief that multi-faceted collaboration will be key to addressing the challenges of cultural heritage protection in the future.

The opening ceremony launched a collaboration between the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts and cultural institutions in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. In the future, GAFA will collaborate with institutions such as Guangdong Museum, Guangdong Museum of Art, Guangzhou Museum of Art, Shenzhen Museum of Contemporary Art and Urban Planning, Shenzhen Art Museum, Guan Shanyue Art Museum, Mao Zedong Comrade Host National Institute of Peasant Movement Former Site Memorial Hall, Memorial Hall of 1911 Revolution, Memorial Museum of Generalissimo Sun Yat-sen’s Mansion, Opium War Museum, Guangzhou Municipal Institute of Cultural Heritage and Archaeology and Guangzhou Thirteen Hongs Museum to promote regional cultural heritage and innovation. During the two-day academic forum, twenty experts from relevant fields at home and abroad delivered speeches on three major topics: “Conservation and Restoration Research and Education”, “Cultural Heritage Management”, and “Conservation Science”.
詹长法的演讲题目是《气候变化与预防性保护的科学方法体系》。系统阐述了气候变化对文化遗产带来的威胁,提出以预防性保护为核心的科学应对体系。他还呼吁加强跨部门协作、推动标准建设、深化国际合作,指出要重视遗产价值的公共阐释与社会参与,利用数字化保护提升文化遗产可持续发展能力。
Zhan Changfa's speech was titled "A Scientific Methodological Framework for Preventive Conservation in response to Climate Change." He systematically elaborated on the threats posed by climate change to cultural heritage and proposed a scientific response system centered on preventive protection. He also called for strengthened inter-departmental collaboration, the promotion of standards development, and the deepening of international cooperation, emphasizing the importance of public interpretation and social participation in heritage value, and utilizing digital protection to enhance the sustainable development capacity of cultural heritage.

Qu Feng's speech was titled "Overview of Cultural Heritage Conservation and Restoration at the Palace Museum." He elaborated on the nearly century-long development of the Palace Museum's conservation and restoration of cultural heritage, gradually establishing a comprehensive conservation system encompassing "scientific research—conservation and restoration—standard setting," reflecting China's inheritance and innovation in the field of cultural heritage protection.

Zhang Huan's presentation was titled "Study on Laser Cleaning of Surface Concretions on Marine Excavated Porcelain." Using porcelain recovered from the Ming Dynasty shipwreck "Nanao No. 1" as an example, the presentation emphasized that laser cleaning is an irreversible process and systematically explored its application and safety in cultural relic preservation.

This microfading data helps museums achieve a fine balance between public visibility and artifact preservation.

Yu Zongren's lecture was titled "The Scientific Code of Millennial-old Pigments: Materials and Multi-Technical Analysis of Mogao Grottoes Murals." The report analyzed the sandstone and conglomerate support, ground layer fibers, and mineral pigment systems of the Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang, and provided an in-depth explanation of the technical methods combining in-situ non-destructive testing with small-sample analysis. It emphasized the need to develop intelligent monitoring and risk early warning systems to achieve scientific protection and public accessibility.

She outlined commonly used testing methods, summarized the types of damage and assessment methods, demonstrated the role of multi-technology combined analysis in determining the basis for restoration and restoring the original appearance, and discussed the corrosion mechanism and future protection and restoration strategies using case studies.

Marinita Stiglitz's lecture was titled "The Japanese Book: Paper, Color, and Lustre." She focused on the materials and craftsmanship of ancient Japanese books, emphasizing key aspects and characteristics such as fiber selection, papermaking, and drying, as well as the impact of traditional pigment systems and animal glue bonding methods on color stability. She also analyzed the application of precious metal decoration and dyeing techniques, such as gold and silver, in book aesthetics.

Using Eurasian paper and manuscripts as case studies, she explored the history and technological evolution of paper as a complex material, emphasizing that when assessing paper quality, a variety of analytical techniques can be used to comprehensively examine its raw materials, production technology, aesthetic characteristics, and the purpose for which it was designed and used in a specific historical period.

Through multidisciplinary analysis, the lecture revealed the material and technological characteristics of waxed paper in the Qing Dynasty, confirming that its production material system integrated composite processes such as dyeing, waxing, polishing, and gold and silver sprinkling, incorporating both local and foreign elements.

Zhao Dandan's presentation was titled "Research on the Application of Comprehensive Spectral Technology in the Identification of Large-Format Oil Paintings and Analysis of Creative Techniques." Addressing the challenges in the conservation research of large-format oil paintings in museum collections, the research team constructed an efficient "surface-point-surface" analysis process based on comprehensive spectral technology. By integrating multimodal imaging technology with precise point analysis technology, they systematically analyzed the types and distribution of pigments in oil paintings and their creative techniques, providing strong technical support for the analysis and conservation of large-format oil paintings.
吕良波的演讲题目是《脆弱青铜文物保护修复与研究——以广州地区出土脆弱青铜器为例》。他以广州地区出土的脆弱青铜器为对象,开展保存状况评估、腐蚀机理研究及保护修复技术探索,为高湿地区脆弱金属文物的预防性保护与修复实践提供重要技术支撑与理论依据。
Lyu Liangbo's lecture was titled "Conservation and Research on Fragile Bronze Artifacts: A case study of Excavated Bronzes from the Guangzhou Region." He focused on fragile bronze artifacts unearthed in Guangzhou, conducting assessments of their preservation status, researching corrosion mechanisms, and exploring conservation and restoration techniques. This provides important technical support and theoretical basis for the preventative conservation and restoration of fragile metal cultural relics in high-humidity areas.

Zhang Shangxin's speech was titled "Reflections on Uncovering and Interpreting the Value of Cultural Heritage in the Process of Conservation." He pointed out that cultural heritage protection is not only about maintaining the material form of cultural relics, but also a process of "seeing people through objects." The core lies in exploring and interpreting the historical, technological, artistic, and cultural values carried by cultural relics, revealing the wisdom and spirit of our ancestors.

Shi Jun's presentation was titled "Risk Management for Cultural Heritage and Artworks: From Prevention to Response." She focused on analyzing the main risks associated with artworks and corresponding management strategies, illustrating the role of insurance in risk transfer and restoration through claims cases, and proposing a multi-layered risk management system centered on professional suppliers, standardized operations, and insurance coverage.

Valérie Lee's lecture was titled "Tracing Lines Across Cultures: Integrating Asian and Western Approaches to Teaching Paper Conservation at the National Institute of Patrimony (INP) in France." She shared her experiences within both Eastern and Western restoration systems, emphasizing the crucial role of cross-cultural training and education in cultivating young restorers with a global perspective and cultural responsibility. Using a current research project in collaboration with China as an example, she stressed that cultural heritage conservation is an ongoing dialogue between technology, knowledge, and culture.

Huang Guang's speech was titled "Conservation of Macau’s Architectural Heritage Conservation Professionals in Museums." He pointed out that the Historic Centre of Macao, as a unique witness to the integration of Chinese and Western cultures, faces multiple challenges in its protection. He emphasized the need for a systematic approach to protection, encompassing risk identification and assessment, material development, and the establishment of a multi-level talent training system. This approach aims to achieve scientific and precise protection of cultural heritage and provide continuous talent support for the cause of cultural heritage preservation.

Using the Hong Kong Palace Museum as an example, he shared the museum's systematic approach to cultivating cultural heritage conservation talents in its daily operations, highlighting its initial progress and its continued exploration and expansion of talent cultivation pathways.

Jia Peng's speech was titled "Project-Driven with a Global Vision: Building an International and Project-Based Collaborative Teaching System for Cultural Heritage Conservation." He stated that the School of Cultural Heritage Conservation and Management at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, leveraging Guangdong's geographical advantage as a crossroads of Chinese and Western cultures, is committed to building a teaching system that combines "internationalization" and "project-based learning" through a three-dimensional linkage of "international resources + real projects + interdisciplinary courses," thereby achieving a seamless integration of cultural heritage protection education from the classroom to the field, and from local to global perspectives.
