Katharina Zinn, an Associate Professor at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, a Researcher in Egyptian archaeology and heritage, and Director of the Institute of Education and Humanities. Katharina will work with teacher Lu Wenying to lead students to combine field research with artistic creation, refer to the wisdom of ancient Egyptian urban planning, and provide creativity and thinking for the design of modern urban space.

Joseph Rees is a PhD candidate in Human Geography at Swansea University and a teaching assistant. He teaches modules such as Geography Fieldwork Skills, Environmental Science and Climate Emergency. Joseph will work with teacher Ruan Haoyi to start with route organization and walk and observe the city based on a certain topic. Through walking experience and microscopic observation, the seemingly small but crucial social interactions, cultural identities and spatial transformations in urban space will be revealed.

Philippa Bradbury

Keynote Lectures

After successfully completing an in-depth field trip around the Innovation School of GBA campus, the students went to the University Town campus immediately to participate in a wonderful lecture by Katharina Zinn - "Micro- and Macrocosms of (city) living past and present - Case Studies from Ancient Egypt". This lecture covers multiple dimensions including archaeology and future cities, geography, humanities and urban structure of ancient Egypt, with a special focus on the two typical research cases of "Ancient City of Amarna" and "Abydos", as well as the profound inspiration brought by comparative studies. Through case analysis, Katharina Zinn led everyone through time and space in an easy-to-understand way, reviewing the life of ancient cities, exploring the uniqueness of urban development from micro and macro perspectives, and trying to draw wisdom from the logic of ancient Egyptian city construction, providing new thinking and inspiration for modern urban construction.

The historical perspective of Katharina Zinn's lecture provides a reference framework for evaluating modern urban planning and architectural design. Participants can draw inspiration from the depth of history and find solutions to the challenges facing modern cities. Secondly, interdisciplinary learning broadens the participants' horizons, enhances their understanding of urban complexity, and inspires them to use multidisciplinary knowledge to solve problems in their future work. Finally, the practical nature of the workshop allows participants to combine theory with practice. Through field trips and lectures, they learned how to pay attention to individual life experiences at the micro level, while grasping the overall development of the city at the macro level.
